Jeanette Foster in Frommers’ has a great article about finding and renting accommodation when you visit Hawaii. She has covered all sorts of places to stay. I found her advice on bargaining especially helpful.
Highlights from her piece:
1. You can bargain best at hotels and resorts. Both pay travel agents a commission of as much as 30% and you can get a good price when business is slow.
2. Most hotels and resorts also have kamaaina (local) rates for islanders, which they may extend to visitors during slow periods. You may try asking from those rates and see if the management relents!
3. The places have special rates for the military, seniors, members of the travel industry, families, corporate travelers, and long-term stays. Do you come under any bof these categories?
4. You may also ask about package deals, which might include a car rental or free breakfast for the same price as a room by itself.
5. But remember: it’s harder to bargain at bed-and-breakfasts
