Freddie LakerFreddie Laker, who was the founder of Skytrain, first ever low budget Airlines passed away last week, on Thursday. Laker was 83 and the cause of his death is not revealed as yet.

Son of a seaman, Laker was born in Canterbury. His childhood was haunted by poverty and depression but he dint let it stop him. At a night school he learnt basics of aviation engineering and mathematics. By the Second World War he become a pilot and engineer with British Air Transport.

After that got into the buying and selling of trucks, aircrafts and made loads of money which he employed into air charter.

He introduced Skytrain, a low fare Airways Service in the year 1977 and changed the view of innumerable of people who thout that Air Travel is something exclusively meant for rich and the famous. It used to charge only $100, as a one way fare for a flight between London and Newyork.

The idea struck the right chord with the masses and was such a hit that all other Airways were left with no options apart from lowering their fares.

Within five years Skytrain was into the top five of Atlantic Air Travel rankings. But it collapsed in 1982 as it was buried under the debt of millions of dollars.
